BACH – THE UPPER WORLD
Six Pieces for Classical Guitar and Cello
In this collection, I present six works by Johann Sebastian Bach for classical guitar and cello, released through the Bandcamp music platform.
From a very early age, I wanted to play almost nothing but Bach. His music was never merely a field of study or interpretation for me. It carried me to another place, to what I understood as the upper world, where movement, rhythm, harmony and form have not yet been separated from one another.
For many years, I approached Bach through the classical guitar. When I felt that I had travelled as far as I could along that path, and had exhausted the possibilities the guitar offered me in this particular search, I turned to the cello. This was not a change of musical direction, but a continuation of the same journey through another body and another voice.
The cello allowed me to enter more deeply into Bach’s music, to experience the melodic line not merely as a succession of notes, but as bodily movement, breath, weight, elevation and return.
Bach’s music does not advance through beats. It unfolds as wave and dance. Waves within waves develop through circular movements and countermovements, radiating progressively and composing an almost inconceivable choreography.
This distinction is essential: a beat is one thing, a pulse another.
The metric system is based on division. It divides time into equal units and distributes accents across them. Pulse, however, is something fundamentally different. It is a centripetal force, an inner coherence that gathers the musical line and allows it to extend.
From this inward concentration, the phrase unfolds centrifugally and expands into space as a living form.
From this personal experience of Bach’s music arose the thought that accompanies the present collection.
CHOREIA: THE LOST ART OF THE MUSES
Part I – Amnesia and the Lost Choreia
Choreia, the circular dance of the Muses, was once understood as a law of the cosmos. It bound rhythm and harmony to the living body, and through the body to the order of the world.
Within its steps and songs, life revealed itself as choreography: movements of feet and voices, planes and planets, souls and stars, all belonging to one and the same cosmic dance.
This cosmic conception of movement extended beyond formal dance, embracing the entire field of human and natural motion.
Movement in itself was regarded as a form of dance. Every gesture, every expression of thought or idea, participated in this greater order.
All these movements, bodily, musical, celestial and intellectual, were gathered within a single concept: Choreia.
In later times, however, a profound amnesia spread across the centuries, concealing the dancing principle at the origin of poetry and music.
Rhythm and harmony, once inseparable from the gesture of the dancer and the breath of the singer, began to be understood as abstract concepts, detached from the body that carried them.
Their true relation to the continuous flow of time and space was obscured, as though a veil had descended between experience and its cosmic foundation.
Yet rhythm, in its truth, is never abstract.
It is carried through the heel and the spine, through the turning of the head and the spiral of the arms.
Choreia was the source from which the Arts of the Nine Muses sprang, the primordial matrix of all poetry.
To separate rhythm from its bodily foundation is to silence the source. Music may remain, but ecstasy diminishes, and the path towards the expansion of time and space remains irrevocably closed.
Yet there are works in which memory has not been lost.
The music of Johann Sebastian Bach belongs to this lineage.
It emerges directly from the measure of dance, not through interpretation, but through embodied presence.
His art is Terpsichore remembered.
It is the sonic return of ancient Choreia.
Part II – Bach’s Dactylic Rings and the Chiasmus of Voices
In Bach, the forgotten source of Choreia begins to flow again.
His Suites are not merely musical forms, but sequences of dances that trace a genealogy of steps:
the Allemande with its measured pace,
the Courante with its flowing movement,
the Sarabande with its imposing stillness,
the Rondeau and the Gigue with their circular return.
Beneath these titles lies a deeper design of foot and verse:
the trochee, the choriamb and the dactylic trimeter, moving through ascending and descending circles.
A singular sequence of moving rings carries the listener as though through a circular dance.
One voice advances, another withdraws. A third returns from behind, until all of them meet at a hidden point of union.
It is as though the music itself were woven from loops and helices, continually returning upward as they ascend.
Isochrony creates arches within arches: melodic lines curving back across one another, so that each part faces its counterpart, as dancers face one another within the current.
This is the secret of Bach’s polyphonic writing.
What appears as polyphony is, in essence, choreography: voices woven together as companions in a circular dance, answering one another through movement and countermovement, advancing only to be called back, moving towards an ending that is never truly final.
In this manifestation, music is transformed once again into the lost Choreia of the Muses.
A resounding testimony that rhythm and harmony were born from dance.

BACH – THE UPPER WORLD
