Mount Hermon, the Spoils of Hermes, and the Dark Kingdom of the Idolatrous and Deceitful Hermes
Mount Hermon thus becomes the mountain where the great rupture is opened. It is there that the Watchers, the fallen Sons of God of the Book of Enoch, swear their terrible oath of descent and inaugurate the supreme act of hubris and the first great transgression of the cosmic order. From that moment begins the mingling of natures, the production of hybrids, and the birth of a world progressively removed from its original harmony.
Hermon is not merely a place of descent. It is a dark gate. A frontier between worlds. For this reason it became associated in later traditions with the Gates of Hades, with the abyss and the invisible realms where souls become the spoils of powers greater than themselves. It is not a mountain of ascent but a mountain of descent, the place where the violation of the boundary becomes a permanent condition of existence.
Within this dark geography appears Hermes.
Not as a benevolent messenger.
But as the lord of the threshold.
As the guardian of the gates.
As the ruler of the passages between worlds.
For precisely this reason he is a psychopomp.
For he dispatches souls.
He guides souls through the gates that he himself oversees and governs. His psychopompic function is therefore not necessarily a beneficent one; it is above all an authority over passage itself, a sovereignty over boundaries, transitions, and crossings.
The Watchers open the rupture.
Hermes establishes himself within it.
The Watchers inaugurate the transgression.
Hermes organizes the world born from it.
The Watchers produce the hybrids.
Hermes circulates the casts and replicas.
The Watchers disturb the order of creation.
Hermes supervises the kingdom of substitutes that emerges from that disturbance.
In the Enochic tradition, the Watchers are responsible for transmitting forbidden knowledge, violating the limits between different orders of existence, and generating hybrid forms of life. Their fall is inseparable from the desire to appropriate what does not belong to them and from the abolition of the natural boundaries that uphold the cosmic order.
The dark affinity between Hermon and Hermes lies both in their symbolism and in their function. In both cases the same principle dominates: the appropriation of what does not rightfully belong to the one who possesses it.
The Watchers appropriate knowledge and powers that were never given to them.
Hermes appropriates forms, identities, faces, and authority.
The former violate the laws of the cosmic order and give rise to monstrous births, hybrids, and giants.
The latter violates the boundary between truth and falsehood, original and copy, creation and imitation.
He thus becomes the lord of theft and replication.
Even the Greek word hermaion, meaning an unexpected gain or windfall that comes into someone’s possession without having been created by that person, appears to belong to the same symbolic family. It signifies possession without generation, acquisition without creation, a prize obtained through appropriation. For this reason Hermes is also called Kerdōos—the god of gain and profit. Possession precedes creation. Acquisition precedes generation.
Nor is it accidental that many of his epithets are associated with roads, gates, transitions, and crossings: Enodios, Propylaios, Hegemonios, Empolaios, Argeiphontes. All these titles converge upon a figure who stands perpetually upon the boundary—between places, between identities, between realities.
Thus Hermes emerges as the ruler of the image.
He does not create; he copies.
He does not reveal; he disguises.
He does not generate forms; he produces casts and replicas.
The face becomes a mask.
The cloud-form becomes an idol.
The original is displaced by its imitation.
Even his caduceus, with its twin entwined spirals, may be viewed as the emblem of a machinery of mixture and reproduction. Not of free creation, but of technical intervention upon living forms. The caduceus thus becomes the symbol of replication, recombination, hybridization, and the manufacture of substitutes.
Hermon remains the dark mountain of the first fall.
Hermes remains the deceitful king of the rupture opened there.
The Watchers inaugurate the transgression.
Hermes organizes the world born from it.
The Watchers produce the hybrids.
Hermes circulates the moulds and replicas.
And between the Gates of Hades and the idols of the lower world stretches the same ancient kingdom of falsification, substitution, and decline—a kingdom in which the copy seeks to replace the original, the mask seeks to replace the face, and the idol seeks to replace living reality itself.
